Use kleki.com its a free software with good basic drawing stuff. Like layers and so on. And try out Wick Editor for animation purpose. Both are free softwares that are open source.

have you been restarting your computer often? Because restarting usually fixes problems(not much of a krita user so might not help).
restarting wouldn't fix it, it's the program itself that's fucking up.

Are you using an old CPU or ssomething? (Just a question, not offending) Maybe, Krita might don't work on your CPU/GPU, that MIGHT or PROBABLY be the reason.

I have not used Krita myself, but that sounds like the kind of problem uninstalling and reinstalling might fix.
Have you done an online search?

Most of the stuff I find on the eraser is either "How to find the Eraser tool" or "How to use the Eraser" (as if people don't know how an eraser works). and even if I find something that helps, I can't even open Krita. So yeah, I gotta delete it and reinstall it, or just wait to see if it decides to work again.
